Link - LoZ : Character Model

Final renders of Link I'm rather proud of myself with how the textures came out.  I had a lot of fun studying and deciphering how Nintendo may create their textures. I feel like I learned a lot from this fun challenge!

Wireframe renders! I tried to keep the polycount of the model reasonable as I wanted this to be more of an HD remake of the HD remake. Something a bit more modern. Polycount came out to about 60,000 quads.

Here's what the final high poly came to look like. I had a blast sculpting this lad. While creating the details in his shapes I tried to focus in on what choices the original concept artist made in designing the character and why those choices made it look so appealing. Even little things like the folds in the clothing all seemed to guide the person up and throughout the design. High poly polycount was around 20 million after being reduced.

UV's are always fun. Trying to cram everything together while still making some sort of sense poses a fun challenge for every character. Fortunately Link's weren't too terribly difficult!

There are some things I would like to differently next time I model hard surface objects, but this was still a lot of fun. Even the texturing on the Sword and Scabbard had that human touch to them. Certain areas being painted to make them stand out more or give more definition to the shapes. However, next time I just need to make alphas for the triforce. Would have saved me a lot of time.

And finally we have the Hylian Shield! Battle worn from fighting off all those Bokoblins no doubt! I never realized how much character could be added into even just the props of a full character design. I'm very grateful I got to use this fanart study to try to understand what makes a great character design.
